About Luke Campbell

I've spent 20+ years managing SQL Server in enterprise environments. Here's what I learned about automation.

Since the early 2000s, I've managed mission-critical Windows and SQL Server platforms in enterprise environments. I know the daily pressure DBAs carry: 24/7 uptime expectations, tight maintenance windows, and hours lost to repetitive “click-ops” installs and troubleshooting.

For years, I automated tasks using a patchwork of one-off PowerShell and T-SQL scripts. But over time, scripts broke, environments drifted, and documentation fell behind. I realized the DBAs who truly thrived weren't working longer hours—they were building repeatable, error-resistant systems that ran themselves.

I created AutomateSQL to help fellow DBAs and engineers build the foundational skills I spent years assembling: purpose-built local lab sandboxes, production-tested Ansible playbooks, and PowerShell frameworks. Now, with the help of AI, these frameworks can be even more powerful and faster to create (as long as you understand what's being created under the hood). When you automate routine builds and patching, you can scale.

“When multiple engineers build servers by hand, every machine ends up slightly different. Automation eliminates configuration drift so your team builds and patches every environment identically—every single time.”

What I Believe

Core engineering principles behind every playbook, lab blueprint, and guide on AutomateSQL.

01

Sandboxes First, Production Never First

Everything I teach is lab-tested in an isolated local lab before reaching live environments. Sandboxes build confidence; guessing leads to incidents.

02

Repeatable Frameworks Beat One-Off Scripts

Idempotent Ansible playbooks and structured automation eliminate configuration drift so your entire team builds and patches every server identically.

03

Protect Your Evenings

Automation gives you peace of mind. When your environment builds, patching, and tests are deterministic, you keep your life outside of work.
